The Challenge: Public Sector Compliance with Drone Data Collection
svGeosolutions GmbH, a German geospatial service provider, was commissioned by a public authority to conduct high-resolution shoreline monitoring. This required capturing over 31,000 high-resolution aerial drone images, totaling more than 310 GB of high-resolution data.
Because the survey area covered public spaces, the raw imagery inevitably captured personally identifiable information (PII), specifically faces of bystanders and vehicle license plates. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), processing and sharing these unblurred images with a public authority posed a severe compliance risk.
To proceed, svGeosolutions faced two critical challenges:
- Compliance: Reliable, high-quality anonymization of all faces and license plates to satisfy strict public-sector data privacy mandates.
- Metadata: The anonymization process must not alter or strip the EXIF metadata embedded in the drone images. This metadata contains critical camera metrics and spatial coordinates (GPS data) essential for subsequent photogrammetry and 3D reconstruction. Any loss of EXIF data would render the entire dataset useless for engineering purposes.
With 31,000 images, manual redaction was financially and operationally not feasible. svGeosolutions needed an automated, enterprise-grade solution that was highly accurate and fast.
The Solution: Anonymization via Celantur Cloud API
svGeosolutions integrated the Celantur Cloud API directly into their existing processing pipeline. Using a lightweight Python script, they automated the entire workflow:
- Secure Batch Upload: The script pushed the 310 GB dataset of high-resolution drone images to Celantur’s secure, GDPR-compliant cloud infrastructure.
- AI-Powered Blurring: Celantur’s advanced deep-learning algorithms automatically detected and blurred faces and license plates in the aerial imagery.
- Automated Download: Once processed, the anonymized files were automatically downloaded back to svGeosolutions' local storage.
Throughout the process, Celantur's API ensured that the critical EXIF metadata remained completely untouched, preserving the spatial integrity required for photogrammetry.
The Results: 28 hours for Compliance, instead of hundreds of hours of manual work
By partnering with Celantur, svGeosolutions successfully delivered the project, meeting all technical and legal requirements of the public authority.
- Metadata Preservation: All camera details, GPS coords, and spatial orientation metadata were fully preserved, enabling flawless photogrammetry and shoreline modeling.
- Compliance: The AI engine reliably detected and blurred PII, ensuring GDPR compliance and protecting the public authority from regulatory liabilities.
- Massive Operational Savings: What would have taken hundreds of hours of manual labor was completed fully autonomously within 28 hours.
- Easy Integration: The simplicity of the Celantur Cloud API allowed svGeosolutions to set up the Python automation script quickly.
"We are very satisfied with Celantur. In a project involving more than 30,000 drone images, people were reliably anonymized. We were particularly impressed by the easy technical handling of the service, the very high quality of the anonymization results, and the efficient support provided by the Celantur team. As our client was a public authority, reliable and GDPR-compliant anonymization was especially important to us."
Scaling Your Geospatial Operations Safely
For public sector projects, automated anonymization is no longer optional, but a competitive necessity. Celantur provides the scalable, secure, and developer-friendly infrastructure that mapping and drone professionals need to unlock the value of their spatial data.
